A 704 sq. ft. bachelor’s apartment transformed into a warm, interactive studio-home—this project was rooted in emotion, texture, and earth. The space, originally a 40-year-old closed box, was completely reworked: we demolished old marble floors, walls, overhead storage, and false ceilings to bring in light, air, and life.
Originally renovated in 2016, the home has continued to evolve with its user. What began as a personal sanctuary with two bedrooms soon shifted—one room turned into a study, which organically grew into a formal workspace. Post-COVID, this space officially became the headquarters of Studio Satviki, now supporting a team of five. From being a roof over one to becoming a full- fledged design studio, the transformation has been both intimate and functional.
The core design philosophy? A dialogue between space and the senses. We used local natural-based materials—cement, sand, and water—to create walls & floors. Artisans and vernacular craft played an essential role: hand-painted clay plates (traditionally used for cooking) were embedded into the floor by our founder herself, making art an everyday companion. To cut demolition waste cost, we introduced split levels and buried rubble beneath them—creating layers of energy and rhythm. A large kitchen cutout opens into a neem tree canopy, blending indoors with nature, while a hanging garden softens the edges.
No layout, no fixed plan—just instinct, spontaneity, and deep care. Every material was chosen to support barefoot living and promote interaction through sight, touch, and sound. The result is a lived-in space that feels timeless, evolving gently through the day—familiar from the first step in.
